Intel Active Management Technology Status: Disabled

Hi,

I am new to AMT vPro technology and just now testing it out on a new Dell 755 workstation.  Initially, I attempted to provision the workstation in Enterprise mode, but was not having any luck with that.  As a test, I switched to SMB mode and found that I can't access the web interface.   I have been on the phone with Landesk support as well as Dell tech support to no avail.

After enabling vpro in the MEBx BIOS extension, I get the following status messages:

MT version 3.0.5.1125
Intel AMT enabled
Intel AMT not configured
Inventory Update
Field Replaceable Unit List:
Table Mismatch - Updating Intel AMT (Complete)
Setting New Table Fingerprint (Complete)

Setting New Table Fingerprint (Complete)
SMBIOS Table
Table Mismatch - Updating Intel AMT (Complete)
Setting New Table Fingerprint (Complete)
ASF Table
Table Mismatch - Updating Intel AMT (Complete)
Setting New Table Fingerprint (Complete)

Also, after logging into Windows XP, I get the following popup:

"Intel Active Management Technology status:  Disabled"

Also, I get the following error in the event log:

Source: Intel AMT
Category: UNS
Description: Intel Active Management Technology Status: Disabled Failed to subscribe to the local Intel AMT.

Following is a list of the troubleshooting steps I have tried so far:

  • Flashed the BIOS to version A08

  • Upgraded the MEBx from 3.0.2.0004 to 3.0.5.1125

  • Installed/reinstalled the Intel ME Interface (HECI) drivers

  • Installed/reinstalled the Intel AMT SOL/ LMS drivers

  • Reinstalled the NIC driver software

  • Unprovisioned/reprovisioned the workstation several times.

  • Reset the CMOS with jumper and by physically removing the battery.

  • Confirmed the AMT configuration settings with both Dell and Landesk tech support.

As you can see, I have invested a significant amount of time in troubleshooting on my own and with tech support.  Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.

Extract drivers as sys/inf files from infinst_autol.exe executable?

I have a customer setting up a driver respository for their standard platforms.  They need the drivers in the repository to be in sys/inf format for automatic builds on the target platforms.  The Intel chipset driver is only available as an exe.  Is there a way to get the inf type driver files from the exe?

Difference between provisioning AMT computers with SCCM 2012 or Intel SCS?

Hi all

I have just started looking into using Intel vPro with our SCCM infrastructure and wondering about what the difference is between provisioning AMT computers with SCCM 2012 or Intel SCS?

Which is best? Which is simplest? Are there any benefits with choosing one over the other? Which is best supported?

Understanding ME's role on systems that do not implement MEBx

$

Greetings.

What purpose does Intel AMT stuff serve, imbedded into system BIOSes, when the OEM decides not to fully implement? Why do they bother putting ME firmware on their chips at all? Why do they bother offering updated drivers and sometimes updated ME versions via a BIOS upgrade?

I was initially curious about two Asus and MicroStar based systems I had to work on, but in researching this, apparently there are plenty of vendors who decide to not provide the MEBx interface. There is no MEBx header upon booting, no Ctrl-P works, and trying to access tcp/19662 gets no response. I have no idea why they decide to not implement the MEBx interface, when they integrate ME into their system BIOS packages, and continue to provide updates to both the drivers and firmware! I have gotten half-assed answers from both vendors, so I decided to come here and ask.

Again, I am confused beyond the ability to ask a questions correctly. Please bear with my rambling.

Since in modern EFI BIOS setups allocated on your common 8Mbit SPI Flash ICs, this is all very structured. A block for the system BIOS, a block for the GbE firmware, and so forth. And a specific address range associated with ME firmware. I have flashed different versions into a running system BIOS by only flashing that range, probably the same way the proper Intel FWUpdLcl utility works. If I run MeInfoWin, it identifies the version I just flashed, and my system still operates correctly. (Granted, this is an OEM BIOS with that region extracted from the firmware BIN, not directly using an Intel ME firmware update image.)

I want to see if, without any assistance or approval from the vendor, if we can enable MEBx. I'm sure ME is already there. There's probably a single byte toggle or something equally easy to enable access. But I could be wrong, the vendors are only flashing it onto their BIOS chips because it's required due to chipset licensing and only enabling the parts necessary for compliance, and none of the code to hook to the hardware devices is there.

Also I understand Intel's position on information disclosure, so if this is something we don't discuss in public, please say so. Besides, reading compiled machine code isn't as difficult as it used to be. Although in paging through the ME firmware hex, I see embedded x86 executable code. No decoding necessary. I'll guess it's the html server and the various configuration utilities that a fully-deployed and activated MEBx uses. And that's my point. The firmware is there. I want to enable it. Why won't said vendor(s) enable it? Choice? Cost? Complexity? Customers? I really want to know.

Sidenote: in trying to research this, I found many, many posts by people that think AMT is bad/evil/wrong. Really?

I'm sure I just scared all the conspiracists: "He wants to voluntarily activate the Intel spyware!!? Is he crazy?!"

Yes. So thanks for reading the ramblings of a crazy person.

And thanks in advance for any illumination provided... it's dark over here.

Intel Active Management Technology (AMT) requirements

Looking to build a system I can remotely power cycle.

Intel AMT seems to be the thing I need to this, which requires a VPRO-enabled cpu and a Q87 chipset.

Does it also require any else on the mobo or is that sufficient? ie are all systems with a vpro cpu and a q87 chipset enabled for AMT?  The manuals and spec sheets I'm seeing for Q87 boards are very non-specific about this, Asus, for example saying about their Q87M board bios settings:

iAMT H/W is always enabled. This option just controls the BIOS extension execution. If

enabled, this requires additional firmware in the SPI device.

As, as far as I can tell, the SPI device is the q87 itself, this seems out of place.

"2nd generation" same as the first?

Seems as if there is no way to tell if you are buying the "previous generation" or the "2nd generation" the model numbers and stats are identical.  Walmart is selling a laptop with a i5-480M.  There is a "i5-480M" listed in the compair precessor list you end up at when you click on either generation.  Actually when you click on the compare processors from either page you go to the same URL and on that URL it doesn't tell you whats previous and whats 2nd.

http://www.intel.com/consumer/products/processors/compare-processors.htm

So 2nd generation has a new sticker on the laptop?

Intel Vpro with SCCM 2012 SP1

I am looking in to using SCS to provision clients for use with SCCM 2012.  There are directions here and here on how to integrate that I am researching.  I have a couple of questions for someone who has done this already.

  1. The SCCM documentation states that SCCM 2012 SP1 only supports AMT up to version 6.1.  Is this for provisioning only or will the Out of Band Management Console not work with newer already provisioned AMT version machines?
  2. For the Configuration Method, with admin control mode does the provisioning server need to be setup with a database?  I would like to use the SCCM primary site server to install SCS, but we are using SQL 2012 and SCS 8.2 doesn't support SQL 2012.
  3. What are the benefits of using a database with the SCS server?

Thanks

TCP DUP ACKs and losing TCP packets

Hi,

I have been trying to solve this problem with Intel(R) PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapter and using Intel(R) PROSet Version 13.5.32.0 drivers.

The network connects with 1 Gbps but I have already downgraded it to 100 Mbps but with no luck. It's still works slow. I changed all the wires but no luck.

Now when I'm really desparate I used wireshark to capture packets, and something seems to be broken.

There's lots of "TCP DUP ACK", "TCP previous segment lost", "TCP out of order" and "TCP Retransmission". This is when the network is used. When using FTP the prosentual loss is something like 50%. Even normal internet usage lost some packets. Both ends seem to say the same thing.

Any ideas about this? For me it seems to be that NIC is broken.

Problems setting up Intel AMT

$

I am trying to configure Intel AMT for remote KVM access on a SuperMicro MBD-X9SCV-Q-O motherboard with an Intel Core i5-2520M processor, both of which claim to support Intel vPro.

The BIOS provides three settings that seem related to AMT/ME:

  1. AMT: ENABLE/disable
  2. Unconfigure AMT/ME: enable/DISABLE
  3. Set ME to disable Mode: enable/DISABLE

(the capitalized option is the one I have chosen currently, but I've tried going through all combinations with no real difference in resultacu)

I've tried several approaches:

  • Enter MEBx tool during POST using Ctrl-P:
The tool does not prompt me for a (new) password, when it opens as I would expect and provides only the following menu structure:
    • Intel(R) ME General Settings
      • FW Update Settings
        • Local FW Update: disabled/ENABLED/password protected
      • Set PRTC
      • Power Control
        • Intel(R) ME ON in Host Sleep States: mobile: on in s0/MOBILE: ON IN S0, ME WAKE IN S4, S4-5 (AC ONLY)
        • Idle Timeout: 65535
    • Exit

No mention of AMT anywhere or a Supported Features setting.

The version of the tool is "Intel(R) Management Engine BIOS Extension v7.0.0053/Intel(R) ME v7.1.40.1161

    • Use the Intel ACU Wizard:
The tool loads correctly and shows the following system information:

    Intel(R) AMT State

Intel AMT on this system:       Supported

    System configuration state:     Not configured

    Intel(R) AMT Information:

    Release:                                7.1.40

    UUID:                                    000000000-0000-0000-0000-0025907CEF18

    Client Control Mode:               Supported

The tool allows me to enter all configuration settings, but when I click "Configure", it fails with this error message:

Failed to complete the Setup operation on this Intel(R) AMT device. Unknown error 1Intel(R) AMT configuration failed. The caller is unauthorized. Valid password for the default admin user not found. Verify the password. AMT Status code - Invalid AMT mode. The SKU version is not supported.

    • Attempt to provision the server form a USB drive:
If I boot with the USB stick inserted, the MEBx tool prompts me with "Found USB Key for provisioning. Continue with Auto Provisioning (Y/N)?"
If I answer "Y", it displays the following error message:

Intel(R) AMT is disabled and USB data missing Manageability Feature Selection

Network and provisioning settings will not be applied.

Configuration Settings from the USB file were successfully applied

Press any key to continue with system boot...

Any ideas what I might be missing?

    Q77 (DQ77MK) currently unusable for AMT/vPro

Hi, I am currently evaluating the Intel DQ77MK Board for its AMT functionality.

I am currently extremely annoyed by the following:

    1. No way to configure AMT via the BIOS or separate configuration screen (Ctrl-R etc).

    2. Current (latest) SCS Console (8.0.13.27) prepared provisioning USB Sticks do not work properly.

Trying to provision in 7+ Desktop mode fails with the Error "DataEntry from an USB DataREcord is invalid" and then "USB Provision flow Error".

Provisioning with USB stick prepared with <6 desktop mode works partially (no power state control).

Reprovisioning with 7+ after 6 (using new password) works to setup power state control... but what a pain.

    3. IDE Redirection is extremely slow. I was trying to setup Windows7x64 without DVD drive via AMT. The expanding files section took an hour!!!

    4. #3 would not be so much of a problem if I could just leave it unattended, but no, automatic disconnect after 60 seconds of mouse inactivity? And that disconnects IDE Redirection? YUP. SERIOUSLY!? Do you expect someone to sit there a full hour to move a mouse?!

    5. After installing a DVD drive I finally installed Windows7, without AMT, only to find that the Link speed of the AMT NIC is stuck at 10mbps. Well no wonder IDE Redirection was so slow.

    6. If I do anything via AMT the link speed is reduced to 10mbps and stays there until I do a full 30 second power off!! And I mean unplug the damn PSU kind off power off. So it has nothing to do with any OS drivers.

The above problems are extremely aggravating!

Are these known problems? Will there be a fix? When?

    Thanks and regards

      Hi,

My company uses Dell laptops as standard. We have offices in Ireland and the USA. We need to remotely administrate laptops in the USA offices from here in Ireland. We have standardised to Dell PCs and Laptops with Vostro as the standard admin spec and Latitude e6410/e6510 as the Developer spec. I have been told by our Dell account manager that the Intel vPro technology just needs to be activated on these laptops.

I checked out this post http://communities.intel.com/docs/DOC-3159 and viewed the demos but am still unsure how exactly to active vPro.

How do I activate Intel vPro technology?

Thanks in advance for any help,
